Van Rollover Lawyer Los Angeles

van rollover accident 7, 12, 15 passenger

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that three quarters of all 15-passenger vans have improperly inflated tires making this type of vehicle more susceptible to rollovers causing serious, permanent and catastrophic injuries to its passengers.

The United States Senate passed a bill in March 2003 which called on the NHTSA to study the risk of 15-passenger vans.  This study found that good tires improved the handling of the vehicle as well as fuel efficiency while preventing tread separation and blowouts which cause most rollover accidents.

Ford, Dodge, GM, Chevrolet are of the most popular 15 passenger, 12 passenger and 7 passenger vans in the United States.  Most frequently these vans are rented through some of the most popular rent-a-car stores such as Enterprise, Budget, Avis, National, Hertz Dollar, Thrifty, Alamo and others.

How to Prevent Van Rollover

Van rollover accidents can be a traumatic event caused by many unforeseen and unexpected factors including the tire tread, road conditions, driver’s influences and weather conditions.  Below are a few tips to help towards preventing some of the most deadly accidents on the road.

  1. Tire Maintenance:  Prior to any trip, make sure that the tires are in good condition.  You can do this by having a auto repair shop or dealership maintenance center examine the tire conditions on your van.   Make sure that the tires are not warn – this is typically the case if the tires seem smooth.  Tire pressure must be checked frequently and before any trip.  Low tire pressure can lead to an increase tire tread and handling issues.  Most importantly however, improperly inflated tires can lead to tire blowouts which are one of the main causes of rollovers.
  2. Safe Driving:  Always practice safe driving, giving your vehicle the proper distance between other cars and paying close attention to the current road conditions.  NEVER drive while under the influence of prescription drugs, alcohol or drugs.  Do not drive if fatigued and pay special attention to weather conditions (rain, fog) which may inhibit your reaction times.
  3. Seat Belt:  The NHSTA found that 80% of those who were killed in van rollover accidents were not wearing their seatbelts.  Make sure that all passengers are wearing their safety belts at all times while in the van.
  4. General Safety:  You should never have more passengers than seats/seatbelts in the van.   If the van is not full, it is important to sit in the seats that are in front of the rear axle.
