why should i purchase uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist coverage on my auto insurance policy in california?

In your auto insurance policy, you are given the option in California to purchase Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist Coverage.  If purchased, this coverage, typically called UM or UIM provides coverage to you, as a driver if you are involved in an accident with someone without insurance or with little insurance coverage.  UM or UIM policy kicks in, and covers you for your damages and injuries.  Essentially, when you purchase uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist coverage, you are buying insurance for yourself.

Like a lot of other states, many people in California are driving without any auto insurance at all.  The minimum auto insurance policy coverage in California remains 15,000/30,000/5,000.  If you are involved in a serious car accident, these limits will most likely not be enough to make you whole again.

In addition to covering you as a driver, you passengers are also covered under the uninsured motorist or underinsured motorist portion of your auto insurance policy.  For example, if you have a passenger in your car, and you are involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist and your passenger is injured, your uninsured motorist policy will kick in and cover the damages that your passenger has suffered.

Uninsured motorist also covers hit-and-run accidents.  If you are involved in an accident with someone who flees the scene of the crash, your uninsured motorist policy will cover you for your damages and injuries.  In addition to the above, uninsured motorist also provides coverage in case you are a pedestrian and are struck by a car without coverage.  The uninsured motorist portion of your auto insurance policy follows you.
