Degrees of Burn Injuries
First Degree Burns
First degree burns are the least severe of the
three types of burns discussed. These
types of injuries result in irritated and red
skin as a result of damage to the skin.
While the skin is not broken in these types of
burns, they are often painful and take a few
days to heal.
Second Degree Burns
These are more severe as the tissue is effected
underneath the skin in addition to the outer
skin. Typically, second degree burn
injuries may result in the opening of the skin
or blistering of the outer skin. As the
inner layer of skin is effected, damage can be
more visible than a first degree burn injury.
Third Degree Burns
Third degree burn injuries are the most severe
types of burns. Such burns often result in
the total damage of the epidermis (outer layer),
dermis (second layer) and subcutaneous (third
layer) of tissue. These types of burns are
often described as charring or leather-like.
Since the entire tissue in the area has been
damaged and burned, these is not as much pain
involved however the recovery and skin grafting
surgery to repair the damage can be painful and
lengthy.
